Potential. It is a word that breeds vision and opportunity. A word that ignites my ambitions and stimulates my thoughts. I love potential!
Does the church have potential? Do you have potential?
We do IF we choose to run from complacency, apathy, and what may seem as safety and run full throttle into what is dangerous.
We are a nation filled with mostly safe churches. Safe churches keep the course. Safe churches don't take on more than they alone can handle. Safe churches may be incubators of warm feelings but also incinerators of the Gospel.
I've had the same conversation with many people. Me: "Why don't you go to church?" Them: "I used to go to church... but nothing happened." That is a code phrase for, "the people were nice and the coffee was good, but nothing hit me. Nothing rocked me. I went in the same person I went out. There was nothing different about the people there. If there is a God, He wasn't there."
That sounds like a safe church.
When I read about the New Testament church, they were anything but safe. In fact they were dangerous! They had a faith that was will to risk anything and everything for the Message that changed their lives from nothing to something! And it begs the question, "shouldn't our church look more like Acts and less like a Volks Wagon?"
We are called to leave everything to follow Christ. We are invited to believe God for the impossible. We are told to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. We are that to find our life we have to lose it first.
We are invited by God to be transformed and that is anything but safe, or complacent. I pray that Berkley Community Church may be a community that embraces a dangerous message. It's the message of the Gospel. And it has shown to have limitless potential.
